Mother-of-Pearl

Mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre or Capiz in the Philippines, comes from an oyster-like shell called Placuna Placenta. These shells are commonly referred to as pearl oysters. The Capiz shell has a translucent quality and is often used for windows and lamps in the Philippines. These shells are not considered protected marine life, so they can be legally harvested. In addition to their use in windows and lamps, these shells are also widely used in art objects. By keeping the shells adequately moist after harvesting, they can be shaped slightly before applying resin. The shells are composed of multiple layers stacked on top of each other. The thickness of these layers can vary among different mollusk groups. While real mother-of-pearl can be used as a glass substitute for windows, it is more susceptible to breakage. On the other hand, it is also considerably cheaper than glass.
