What is Peanut Butter?

Peanut butter is a spread made from finely ground peanuts. During the grinding process, the peanuts release their natural oils, creating a smooth and flavorful product that has become popular worldwide.

While peanut butter is commonly known by this name in English-speaking countries, it is called pindakaas in the Netherlands. When peanut butter was introduced to the Dutch market in the mid-20th century, the word “butter” was legally reserved for products made from milk fat. As a result, the name pindakaas (“peanut cheese”) was adopted instead. Despite its name, pindakaas contains no cheese and is primarily made from ground peanuts, sometimes with a few additional ingredients to enhance flavor and texture.
