Birambie (Bilimbi)
Fawaka · Birambie / Belimbing / Blimbing · 500 g
Fawaka Birambie is a tropical fruit from Suriname, also known as bilimbi or blimbing. The elongated fruit is usually several centimetres long, with a green to yellow-green, slightly translucent skin. Although related to star fruit (carambola), birambie has a distinctly sharp, refreshing sour taste rather than the generally milder, slightly sweet flavour of ripe carambola.
The fruit is used in Surinamese, Indonesian and other Southeast Asian cuisines. In Indonesia it is commonly called belimbing wuluh. Its natural acidity makes it a useful flavouring in savoury dishes, including chutneys, sambals, soups, curries and rice dishes. It also brings a distinctive tangy note to fish and seafood.
Add birambie to taste to sambal, chutney or a fish dish for a fresh, tangy accent.
