Sake Rice wine
In 1637 Gekkeikan founder Okura Jiemon came to the southern district of Fushimi Kyoto. This to realize our own sake brewery. Fushimi was famous for its water.
Through years of effort, Okura's sake grew in popularity. Despite the appreciation, the Okura Brewery began to constantly look for ways to exceed expectations. In 1868 the Okura brewery started a formal plan to improve the art of sake preparation.
To illustrate the ambition of this plan, the brand name "Gekkeikan" (pronounced Gay-Gay-Khan) was adopted. Gekkeikan which literally means "crown of laurel" and stands for the symbol of victory and glory.
In 1905 it was Gekkeikan who was the first brewery to offer sake in glass bottles. An improvement that would ensure consistently good taste. In 1953 Gekkeikan was the country's largest Sake Producer and remains the best-selling Sake worldwide to this day. This rice wine has an alcohol content of 14.6%.
